COPILOT HYPE
Carlos de Paula
As someone who works with technology and writing the whole day, I am always open to exploring new trends.
It took me a while to find out more about Microsoft’s Copilot, and I was very much disappointed, on one hand, and happy on the other as a translator-writer.
Suddenly, a Copilot bar began to appear in new files in Microsoft Word, so I put it to the test. It asked me what I wanted to write about. So, I told AI I wanted to write about a medical issue.
The text, which was obviously entirely based on a Wikipedia entry, was not bad. It was coherent and concise, although dry as most Wikipedia entries.
Then I went a step further and asked about “Carlos de Paula Author”. There is no Wikipedia entry under my name, nor under the name of a homonymous writer based in Brazil. But there are quite a few mentions about the body of my work on Amazon and several other sites.
The text was laughable. It was praising my fiction and novel writing, with great details, making me look like a budding William Shakespeare, except that I have not published any novels. Most of my published books are about the history of automobile racing, and there was not a single mention of it in the entire text. It was not about the other Carlos de Paula, who writes about politics and religion.
Thus, I would give Copilot a D- for the medical text, and F for the writeup on me. All hype, no content.
Carlos de Paula is one of the top Brazilian Portuguese translators in the USA since 1982. And now a top Portuguese AI Translation editor as well.
